In the end of June 2019 the Nordic Soroptimist gather their strength for a wonderful week of empowering and educating young women in the Soroptimist Nordic Leadership Academy (SNLA). The academy is a leadership training week for women of 20 to 29 years old during which the soroptimist mentoring programme is presented to the participants. This year the mentoring presentation was held by Saija Kuusisto-Lancaster from Finland and Anna Rosenqvist from Sweden on 31st June 2019.
The soroptimist mentoring programme is an opportunity for both the soroptimist mentor and the mentee. There are tens of Nordic soroptimists offering their cv:s to the young participants in SNLA. The participating women can choose which soroptimist cv best answers their needs. Even though the mentee chooses the mentor the mentoring programme is a two-way mutually beneficial relationship. For the mentee the main point is to develop their dreams into goals, be it in professional or personal life. Kuusisto-Lancaster states: ”The mentors will benefit from challenges the mentees offer” so the interaction and communication is very fulfilling for the mentors also.
The mentoring process consists of the kick off (in SNLA week), the actual mentoring process and meeting between the mentors and mentees and at the end the final evaluation. This process is planned to last about a year. The initiative is left to the mentee because this kind of resourcefullness is demanded from her.
This year Turku club has several mentors in line waiting for inspiring meetings and proudly has Kuusisto-Lancaster coordinating the Nordic process with other soroptimist sisters. The mentees will contact the mentors during summer and the process will continue. These relationships may last for years or at least for the year to come. The kick off was definetly inspiring!
